Platysmal bands (or platysmal cords) are vertical muscle bands that appear at the front of the neck.
They are caused by aging, genetics, or repetitive movements of the neck and lower facial muscles.
Main causes
• Aging and loss of muscle tone: Over time, the platysma muscle separates at the center, weakens, or hypertrophies, and the skin loses elasticity.
• Genetics: Anatomical structure and family predisposition influence their early appearance.
• Muscle activity and weight loss: Speaking, smiling, clenching the jaw, or rapid weight loss (such as after a weight-loss regimen) make them more visible.
Treatment options
• Non-surgical treatments:
• Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections: Temporarily relax the muscle to soften the appearance of the bands (effect typically lasts 3 to 6 months).
• APTOS threads, the WIRE 3.0
• Surgical treatments:
• Platysmaplasty or neck lift: A surgical procedure involving tightening, repositioning, or suturing the platysma muscle at the midline for a long-lasting result.
